Those Guys! Official "Colton Avenue" Press Release

(Edited versions of this may appear in various places around the Redlands community.)

January 9th, 2001

The University of Redlands' a cappella group Those Guys! will be hosting a release party for their long-awaited second album "Colton Avenue" on January 19th, 2001 from 5:00 - 8:00p.m.  The event will be held at the University of Redlands Alumni House.

"Colton Avenue" features an eclectic and exciting array of songs - 17 tracks in all - in a myriad of styles, spanning '80s new wave ("Only A Lad," "Tips For Teens"), classic rock ("More Than A Feeling"), doo-wop ("Duke Of Earl"), musicals ("Talk To Me"), gospel ("View That Holy City," "Everything Gonna Be Alright In Christ") and pop balladry ("Lullabye"). The album also features several special performances, including: the legendary "International House Of Shoes," a version of The Bobs' "My Shoes" performed in four different languages, featuring a cameo from former director Devin Lawrence (the original version appears on their debut album "That Album!"); the infamous "Eine Kleine NOT Musik," one of the oldest songs in the group's repertoire; the 12 minute opus "Switching Channels: The TV Theme Song Medley," first performed for audiences in May of 1998; and last, but certainly not least, a special live bonus track of The Commodores' "Easy."

Recording of "Colton Avenue" commenced during the summer of 1998 at Cal State San Bernardino, and the engineering was overseen by Matt Pearson (cousin of Those Guys! alumnus Ross Crutchlow). The whole process was done "live" to eight tracks, with overdubs, giving the group far more sonic freedom and separation than it had on its previous effort "That Album!", which only utilized two tracks (or "stereo pair," for those in the know). Post-production began in the Fall of 1998 with then-musical director Christopher Chardi and engineer Matt Pearson. The final mastering was done by University of Redlands alumnus Brandon Rhoades in the Summer of 2000 at the University of Redlands' Electronic Music Studio. The CD was produced by PacificNorth in North Vancouver, British Columbia.

Those Guys! was founded in 1994 at the University of Redlands by then-student Devin Lawrence and alumnus Damon Tribble as a barber shop quartet. Just as the personnel of Those Guys! evolved, so did the repertoire, and by 1995 they were performing a myriad of styles such as doo-wop, folk songs and more modern a cappella. The group developed a sizable following both on campus and in the community for its entertaining, eclectic performances and its trademark sense of humor. The group has appeared several times in the annual Feast of Lights celebration, and in 1996 received much praise for their rousing performance of "Everything Gonna Be Alright In Christ" (a studio version of which is included on "Colton Avenue").  Those Guys!' first album, simply titled “That Album!”, was released in January of 1997. In 1998 Those Guys! performed a joint concert with legendary a cappella group The Knudsen Brothers entitled “An Evening of A Cappella Magic,” and were invited by the Knudsens as VIP guests to “World Acapellafest ‘98.”  The festival included performances by several major a cappella groups including The Bobs, The Nylons and Rockapella.

Those Guys! is still active with new performers and new leadership.  For more information on Those Guys! and "Colton Avenue," visit "That Website!" at http://thoseguys.mysite.com. For booking information, both on and off campus, contact Ryan Duckworth at 909.307.7432.
